Clue | From Berlin with Solidarity

Post-Roe v. Wade, yet another disturbing new reality emerged: authorities could exploit individuals' data if they sought an abortion. (A phenomenon already underway.) The warning to delete cycle tracking apps went viral, from the corners of Cosmo to the far-reaches of Reddit.

Inspired by the urgency of the situation, we decided to pitch a pro-bono idea to Clue, a period tracking app based in Germany that protects users’ data thanks stringent EU privacy laws. With very little money, much less time and calling a lot of favors (across nine timezones!), we launched a campaign to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the overturning.

Because we all work in advertising, we realized a greater opportunity for reach with something shareable online. So, of course, we pitched a last-minute film (with vignettes inspired by internet tropes about Americans returning from European vacations) to shed light on what Berlin-protected freedoms actually look like in a post-Roe world.

And naturally Amy put her German degree to good use for wild-postings in Berlin.

“You're allowed to do that in Berlin*. *Protect the data of our period tracking app's U.S. users.” and
“Is there a long German word for "privacy-based period tracking app that won't give the data of its American users to the U.S. authorities?" Definitely: Clue.”
